Tampa Bay Visits Sunrise for Early-Season Panthers Matchup

The Panthers kept their early home schedule moving Friday with the in-state opponent that always adds a little extra charge.

The Panthers kept their early home schedule moving Friday with the in-state opponent that always adds a little extra charge.

Florida beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 at BankAtlantic Center on Oct. 13, according to the Panthers’ 2006-07 schedule record. The result moved Florida to 3-1-1 through the opening stretch and gave Sunrise another home win in a month that already had the arena feeling busy.

The Lightning bring a different kind of attention than most visiting teams. They are not just another club coming through the schedule. Tampa Bay is the other NHL team in Florida, close enough for the matchup to feel regional even when the standings are still young. For fans in Broward, beating Tampa Bay at home gives the night a little more bite.

The game also matters because it keeps BankAtlantic Center in the local rhythm. The Panthers had already opened the season at home against Boston, gone on the road, returned for Carolina, and now hosted Tampa Bay. That run of early dates gives Sunrise residents and Piper students repeated reminders that hockey season is not an occasional event. It is part of the fall calendar.

For students, the exact standings may not be the main thing. The visible parts are easier to remember: cars around the arena, Panthers and Lightning gear, a Florida-vs.-Florida matchup, and the bragging rights that come with a one-goal home win. In a school where students follow different sports at different levels, an in-state game gives even casual fans an entry point.

The official schedule supplies the hard frame: Oct. 13, Tampa Bay at Florida, Panthers 3, Lightning 2, BankAtlantic Center as the primary home arena for the season. The local meaning is what those facts do in Sunrise. They keep the arena lit, the rivalry close and the Panthers in the county’s sports conversation.

On Friday night, west Broward got the better side of the state matchup.
